                TELL ME AGAIN LORD
                                                                    by Joyce Noel Wyatt

The rain cast a dreary, gloomy shadow over the world outside, but my heart portrayed a brighter picture.  With all of our belongings in our car and a U-haul truck, my husband and I and our two children proceeded down the highway headed for Tennessee.  The following day, we were to take our places as houseparents at a children’s home.

This was the day about which I had dreamed.  I was reminded of the times, when just a child myself, I would bring neighborhood kids into our home to feed them and give them clothes.  These were children who captured my tender side --children whose fathers drank too much and mothers too timid to make changes.   At that early age of 12, I knew that my life’s work would involve helping children like these.  I desired to work in an orphanage.

In a few hours we reached our destination and, as I looked at the cottage where we would be living with 10 children we didn’t know, a feeling of loneliness enveloped me.  What happened to the bright picture my heart had portrayed only hours before?  Ashamedly, I suddenly wanted my own home, a pretty stone house back in Lexington, Kentucky.  I looked around for a familiar face, but there was none to be seen.  It was then that I sadly missed my friends. Silently I prayed, “Tell me again Lord this is your will.”

My husband took my hand and said, “Come on, let’s go in.”  Slowly we walked down the steps, our children close behind.  Upon reaching the door, I nervously rang the bell.  Ten little faces greeted us with questioning eyes. One of the older girls asked, “Have you come to be our mother and father?”  Another one chimed in, “Will you stay a long time and not leave us?”  Choking back tears, we nodded yes.  And then, without further ado, they showed us their skinned knees and their bruised elbows; they named their siblings; they told us what chores for which they were responsible, and they revealed their hopes and dreams.

“Tell me again Lord.”  I remembered my sudden, hurried prayer.  No doubt about it.  In those initial moments and for many years to come, God told me what I needed to hear.  His tender words rang loud and clear in the lives of those ten little girls and others whom God placed in our care.
